New Mexico has one of the highest incidences of cleft lip and cleft palate in the country. The reasons for this are unclear, but the incidence is higher in Hispanics and Native Americans. Children with clefts must undergo multiple operations in their lives. These children and families need support and care throughout their lives.

The Cleft Palate Education Fund was established in 2003 to provide supplemental educational funding for the staff and clinics in the form of medical education materials and sponsoring team members to attend national meetings. In addition medical supplies such as feeding nipples, books, meal gift certificates are needed for families.

Donations have been received from physicians, medical companies and patients. The fund is administered by the New Mexico Medical Society and is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for charitable organizations. Therefore, all donations are tax deductible.

Donations to the New Mexico Cleft Palate Education and Resource fund are needed:

Feeding supplies. Special nipples and bottles are needed for newborns. These are sometimes very difficult to find, so we need to keep a stock on hand for new mothers.

Books in English and Spanish. Reading books are a useful tool for children to learn to read and speak. Age ranges from 1 to 6 years. New books are given to children.

Meal gift certificates. Families sometime travel from around the state for appointments and surgeries. $10 -$20 coupons from Wendy’s would be nice to give to these families.

SmileFest! – If you would like to earmark the donation to the  Annual Smilefest to be held in the Summer , please mark on check.

This fund is administered by the New Mexico Medical Foundation and is tax-exempt
